Now that your DHA has identified explosion risks at your facility . . . what are the next steps?
Each application will be unique and there are many types of Explosion Mitigation measures to be considered. You will need to provide vessel/layout drawings, dust explosive characteristics and process operating conditions in order for the application to be properly evaluated.
If your vessel is located outdoors and in a safe area without personnel present, then Explosion Relief Panels could be considered that would relieve and direct the deflagration flame and pressure to an outside safe location. The vessel geometry, location relative to obstructions and process operating conditions are all factors to consider when selecting the appropriate venting solution. Explosion Relief Panels can also be considered if the vessel is located indoors and next to an exterior wall with an explosion vent duct to direct the fireball to an outside safe location.
If the application does not fall within the tested limits of the passive protection measures mentioned above or if the vessel location could put personnel in harm’s way of a flame/pressure release, then a Dry Chemical Suppression System might be the right choice. These systems are designed for the specific application using sophisticated computer modeling based on decades of testing and third party ATEX certification. The SmartDS Dynamic Detection System identifies the pressure of the deflagration and activates dry chemical extinguisher(s) to suppress the deflagration within milliseconds, yielding a reduced explosion pressure below the vessel strength to protect property and save lives.
